HOWDY YALL!!

I know its been awhile sense we put out the last Gazette, I’ve been the lazy one and Dixie Heart has been the real Trooper in keeping up with the Gazette.  The Club Annuals this year have been a lot of fun to shoot.  We started in February with the Shoot Out on the Santa Fe River in Fort White. If you never shot at this club, you should give it your best try and do so, Delta Glen and Jessie Toothpick and the rest of the Ft. White gang do a wonderful job. The stages have become challenging and fun to shoot.  Even tho it rained for the match, I think everyone had a good time.  At one point, someone in the club went and got beach umbrellas for all the loading and unloading tables. The best thing I like about shooting there is the up-hill targets. Also, on one stage we had a lot of targets out there and you had to void just one, and the way its was set-up it looked like there was 30 or more targets! It was a challenge to see how you would shoot it without shooting the one target. And I loved the Antelope Targets with their little cowboy hats!  So if you like a little challenge in your shooting, please come to Ft. White.  They shoot on the 2nd Saturday …. Next was the Ides of March, I know most of you shot this Annual and what a wonderful match.  As always, it does sell out fast, there are good vendors and great stages to shoot. My personal favorites are the star targets that we shoot …and the Mission Bells.  It’s great to see everyone dressed in there green and having lots of fun.  This year, I went to Cowboy Church and found it very interesting.  This too is a good Annual to attend if you have not shot it before …. Next was the big trip to Mule Camp.  This year they had lots more vendors and free side-matches. It was hotter this year, but you know us Florida Cowpokes, we can take the heat!  The stages were up close and big, something like the Last Stand.  I know some people said that they were not challenging, but I felt that they were great stages and did make you have to think about they way you were going to shoot it. On the Train stage, if you did not stop at the right point of the window to shoot your rifle, you could not see the 10th target well.  So it was challenging to a point. I had a lot of fun and nice to see old faces again, like SixGun Sallie and Dingo Dave.  So a BIG CONGRATS and a BIG Cowboy YAHOO to the following Florida cowpokes:  Men’s 49er - Dingo Dave 3rd place; Bullhead Moody 6th place; Rock’n Rob 15th place  Dualist - Amaduelist 5th place; Blackhand Charlie 8th place;  Major Mishap 14th place  Lady B Western – Brenda Star 4th place  Classic Cowboy – Deadwood Woody 13th place, Chiloh 17th place Elder Statesman – Papa Dave 3rd place; Hawnose Joe 7th place; Earpsky 8th place F.C. Dualist – Texas Jack McCoy 4th place; Blackhills Blackie 8th place; Brocky Jack Norton 9th place Frontier Cartridge – Lightnin Hawk 7th place; Chuluatus Bad Hombre 9th place Frontiersman – Buffalo Brady 3rd place Gunfighter  Jessie Toothpick 6th place; Cypress Sun 11th place  Junior Boy – Nass T Dude 6th place Lady 49ers – Six Gun Sallie 2nd place; Oakley Mouse 3rd place; Sassy Teton Lady 9th place; Savannah Belle 15th place Ladies Traditional – Prussian Blue 11th place Ladies Dualist – Canyon Lake 1st place  Lady Gunfighter – Dakota Lil 2nd place;  Little Buckaretts – Pistol Packin Peanut 1st place  Little Buckaroos – Badlands Drifter 4th place; Young Deadlee Headlee 7th place  Modern Deadlee Headlee 4th place Col. Dan 13th place  Senior – Gun Dawg 12th place  Two Feathers Jack 28th; Johnny the Kid 29th place; Fuzzy Bob 39th place, Gunn Belt 42nd place  Senior Dualist – Deadly Tedley 1st place; Deadly Sharpshooter 5th place; Doc Huckleberry 10th place  Traditional – Santa Fe River Stan 5th place; Deadwood Jake 9th place; Delta Glenn 11th place …… whew!!  I hope I got everyone right and did not leave anyone out.  So as you can see the Florida Cowpokes did very well.  I like going to Mule Camp and meeting new people and seeing the old friends again as well.  That’s about all from the Mouse for now and I’m hoping you have a great summer and see ya on the trail!!

The Last Stand 2006 – Shooter, Range Officer, Vendor

Now I know that Oakley Mouse will fill everyone in on the fun and games at this year’s Last Stand, however, I wanted to share my thoughts from the various positions I experienced this year:

As a Shooter – this was one heck of a good match!  I can’t say that I’ve shot a better one yet.  The Stages were very well written, the Spaghetti Western theme was present throughout the match. The props and stage construction made me feel a little closer to Clint Eastwood and the rest of the cowboys that the movies in that genre that I grew up watching.  It was a wild west experience from beginning to end.  What more can a cowgirl ask for??

As a Range Officer – I have only praise for the entire last stand committee.  They went out of their way to make sure that we were prepared for the shooters each day. On the rare occasion that clarification was needed, a committee member was on the stage in a flash.  Several different committee members came by the stages throughout the day to deliver lunches, ask if everything was going alright and see if anyone just needed a break.  You can’t beat that kind of service and appreciation.  RO-ing The Last Stand is always fun and these folks made it a pleasure.

As a Vendor – I was mailed a packet well in advance of the Match detailing my accommodations and questioning any special needs.  On the day I arrived, I was met immediately and shown to my space.  I was asked if the space was adequate or if I had any complaints about its location.  I was asked daily if sales were going well. The last day of the match I was given a comment card to voice any complaints or suggestions.  I had neither.  Once again, the committee was on top of things and I was very pleased with the organized and accessible way the vendors were set-up.

I intentionally didn’t mention any names of the Committee members only because I didn’t want to leave anyone out.  Every one of them from the Prop Committee to the R.O. Committee, to the Vendor Committee, to the Construction Committee, to the Registration and Scoring Committee and the Social Committee out did themselves.  They all deserve awards for working all year long to make the SASS Florida State match the best in the country!  In my eyes they accomplished just that!

In closing (I know I’ve gotten a big long-winded) I would like to say that of the three hats I wore this year, the Shooter came first because that is what it is all about for me.  These matches are possible because of shooters.  They should always be designed with the Shooter first and foremost in mind. My sincerest gratitude goes out to everyone involved in making this one helluva good time!!

Ruskin – January

It’s a new year and time to find out what the Doodle Hill Regulators have in store for us.  Over 50 Shooters show up for some fun on this warm January day. It appears that Doc Dalton and his Gang are up for a good match, as always.  All the targets are big & close and the scenarios are interesting. We have the Texas Star on stage 5. We shoot it with one pistol and pick-up any misses with the shotgun. If ya can get ‘em all with the pistol, ya don’t even have to shoot your shotgun.  The match runs nice and smooth and good time is had by all.

When the shootin’ is over Doc & Dave Smith serve up some chow, the burgers are a plateful, the sausages are smothered in peppers & onions and the famous Doodle Hill Chili is back on the menu. They had some fine door prizes, including some nice cigars and some ammo.

Now it’s time for the awards.  Several people shot this one clean. Doc defers to TNT to write next month’s stages, figurin’ his must’ve been too easy. Now we all know this ain’t possible!  Even the best of ‘em can rewrite a stage in the middle of shootin’ it!

Top Gun for the day goes to Doc Dalton himself – Congratulations Doc!!  He can shoot straight and fast, while directin’ the match, cookin’ the grub and shootin’ the breeze all at the same time!

Thanks to all the folks at Doodle Hill for a great match!

Ruskin – February

Despite mother nature’s unpleasant demeanor on this day, many shooters show up in hopes of getting’ in a match.  Although the forecast calls for more rain bands throughout the morning, we begin registerin’ when the rain subsides.  48 shooters stick around for the action.

Doc Dalton is usin’ six stages written by TNT this month.  I must say that they are all fun.  The targets are big and close and the match moves right along.

Not a drop of rain fell durin’ the shootin’.  I think maybe that cloud of hot air that billows above all ranges precedin’ a match may have kept the rain clouds away from Ruskin today.

Doc Dalton & Dave Smith have the fire goin’ under the burgers & sausages by the time we finish down range.  After a bite to eat, Mayeye Rider has the scores done and it is time for the awards.  And there are plenty of door prizes, as always, at Doodle Hill.

TNT got some new guns last night and decided he wants to shoot Gunfighter with Cypress Sam today.  Sam is always right helpful to anyone who asks and today is no exception. He gives TNT tips here and there throughout the match. TNT has a blast shootin’ Gunfighter and even manages a clean match at that!!

Congratulations to Seven on bein’ Top Gun for the day!

Ruskin – March

This morning’s turn out is lookin’ good.  About 75 shooters show up for some fun with the Doodle Hill Regulators.  It’s a full house and we’re all rearin’ to go.  We are happy to see that the Jailer and Wolf Rider have traveled from Orlando to Shoot with us today.

Doc has written his usual fun and fast stages. This club has some of the best targets around and the set-up crew has pulled a bunch of ‘em out for us.  Doc likes to throw in a little 3-gun when he can and today is no exception. Shootin’ the rifle on the move is optional on stage 3.  Those who can pull it off do a great job and save some time doin’ it.

The chuck wagon is smellin’ good, Dave Smith and Doc have cooked up some burgers, sausages and hot dogs.  That aroma will get ya through the last stage or two in a flash!!

The Door Prizes are plenty, the Miakka Misfits give away a free entry to their annual match in April.  The Doodle Hill Regulators always have a free lunch and a free shoot in the pot.  Miscellaneous prizes are donated by shooters every month.

With all the competition here today – Seven manages to take Top Gun …. Congratulations!

Orlando – March

TNT & I thought it was time to check-in with the Weewahootee Vigilance committee to see how they are doin’ since the last stand.  They are doin’ just fine and puttin’ on a good match to boot.  The Jailer informs us that all the stages for today’s match are written by none other than Wolf Rider.  They have a good turn out and the weather is perfect so ya know it’s gonna be a good day.

We are lucky enough to posse with Quickdraw Connie and Bad Hombre. We shoot the same clubs quite often, but we don’t get to posse together enough. Boston Belle and Two Gun Tuscarora are also possein’ with us.  It’s good to see them again.

The Jailer warned us that we’d be aimin’ those six shooters today, and he wasn’t lyin’.  Wolfie has us aimin’, thinkin’ and movin’ on all the stages. She did a great job of writin’ these stages.  They are all fun and that’s the whole point!

White Cap stopped in to say “howdy”.  He is layed up after a sawbones got ahold of him. He’s still got quite a while to go before he’ll be shootin’, but it sure was good to see him.

The Buffalo Lips Girls have the grub smellin’ good before the match is done.  Wolfie also does a great job with the scores.  She has them out in no time and Jailer and Conway Kid get on with the awards.

Congratulations to Santa Fe River Stan on bein’ Top Gun for the day!!

T&R – April

Lady Robin & Ol-Glor-E welcome shooters to their April Fool’s Day match.  And no foolin’, it is always a good one!!  One Fella even came all the way from Michigan to shoot this one.  Three Colts left the family at Disney World and snuck right over to the match.

I also got to shoot with Poison Lily from Jacksonville for the first time.  The little lady is somethin’ else.  She came to the Last Stand to see what Cowboy Action Shooting is all about.  I think she was quite impressed, she informed Dad, Dominus Mortuus, on the way home that he needed to order her some guns so she could play this game.  She turned 13 just a few days before her first SASS match and this was her third match and what a Cowgirl she is!  She has a total of three misses for the day and her times are nothin’ to sneeze at.  I’m pretty sure that she will one day be a shooter to be reckoned with!

The usual T&R fare is ready for us after the last stage. If you haven’t shot and eaten at this club, you’re in for a pleasant surprise from the chuck wagon.  Ol-Glor-E is king of the fire pit, but lady Robin serves up some mighty tasty sides includin’ potato salad, cole slaw, pasta salad and desserts. You just never know what these two will have in the chow line.  One cowboy was under the weather this morning, but after getting up to snuff, he rode out just to eat some of the famous T&R chow!

Congratulations to Top Gun for the day – Seven!!  His buddy Three Colts was on his heels all day, but Seven managed to hold him off!  Nice job!

Orlando – April

This morning’s weather is rainy & cloudy – I think it kept some folks at home that might otherwise be out shootin’ today.  Somehow we luck out and have cloud cover all day, but no rain for the match.

The jailer and Conway Kid have put together a fun match. To make things a little more interesting, they are usin’ some Western 3-gun targets on a couple of stages.  For those of you who don’t shoot 3-gun, we have two stages with square pistol targets with centers that will fall out if hit.  Each center that falls is a one second bonus.  I am havin’ a good time with these!

The Buffalo Lips Girls are busy cookin’ the grub by the time we get to Stage 6.  They are great sports to come out every month and supply the chow for the  match.

Thanks to the Weewahootee Vigilance committee for an interesting and fun match.  Congratulations to Santa Fe River Stan on being Top Gun for the day!!

Ruskin – April

Doc Dalton has been working overtime to come up with this one.  He is putting the “Action” back in Cowboy Action Shooting today.  Stages one and two are combines for a “true grit” scenario.  The shooter uses 4 pistols, 2 rifles and a shot gun.  This is always a good time with lots of movin’ and shootin’.

Stages three and four have walls to shoot around and through.  Now we have some cover from those bad guys as we take ‘em down one at a time.  Stages five and six are wide open with three shootin’ positions and lots of targets.

This is one fun match! Thanks Doc for bein’ so creative and keepin’ the scenarios fresh.  Doodle Hill is always a blast!!

No matter how good a match is, there is always a cowpoke or two who don’t get their money’s worth. Congratulations to Seven for flyn’ through this one.  He is Top Gun for the day!

Ruskin – May

Well, it is a hot day and Doc and his crews have quite a match set-up.  There are targets every where and a few tables on each stage.  It looks like an action match to me!

Stages one and two are rather gentle, stages three and four have the wowie-zowie – on stage three it is shot as a rifle target, then on stage four it is a pistol target, everybody has a good time with this one.  Stages five and six are movers with three shootin’ positions.

All the stages are fun and challengin’ , Doc is off on a little vacation next month and he has left us with a lastin’ impression!

Due to Doc’s absence, the Doodle Hill Regulations will have their Annual match on the 4th Sunday in July this year.  Doc has TNT Runnin’ the match for him in June.

Just so ya’ll understand how much thinkin’ we had to do, only one cowpoke shot this one clean and he just so happens to be the Top Gun for the day too ……yep – Seven has done it again!  Congratulations on those Quick reflexes and a keen eye!

T&R – June

Lady Robin and Ol-Glor-E are headed to End of the Trail this month, with the match they have set-up, I don’t know where they found the time.  They have acquired quite a target collection and they’re shownin’ off a great deal of them today!

Stages one and two are pretty standard lookin’ for the game.  Stages three and four have so many targets on ‘em ya have to hit somethin’ when you shoot.  The round count is 24 for both stages and the target count is 24.  Guess there’s no double tappin’ goin’ on here!  Stages five and six reveal “Big Moe” as a pistol target and that never hurts my feelings.

The match is a blast and lunch is always worth mentionin’ Ol-Glor-E’s hamburgers and hot dogs go great with Lady Robin’s salads.  Today she has a colorful pasta salad and of course, there are always Cookie’s cookies!!

During the awards we discover that the T&R ranch has added a new award to their line-up.  They now have a “Top Cowgirl” award as well as a “Top Cowboy” award.  Yours truly is honored to receive the first Top Cowgirl award from them, Top Cowboy, who was also Top Gun for the day is – Seven. Congratulations, Seven on another amazin’ match!!

History Lesson: The Hat That Won the West

When the era of the big cattle drives began in the 1860’s hats worn up to that time by frontiersman weren’t up to the job.  The cheap wool brims quickly collapsed under the wear and tear of rain, wind and sun.  Cowboys who wore them often found it necessary to pin the front of the brim to the crown to keep it out of their eyes.  The first Stetson hat, the “Boss of the Plains” was practical, durable and stylish hat that would last through years of grueling work on the prairie.  But the West is a big place and the needs of the men varied and so did the styles of their hats.  Desert drifters preferred a hat with a flat-topped crown and wide brim to reflect sun and provide as much shade as possible.  The southwestern cowboys wanted a wide-brimmed hat with a high crown to keep their heads cooler.  Men from the windy northern plains liked a smaller brim for more stability in the wind.  A hat’s individual style, though, came from the hatband – originally added to provide more stability to the base of the crown and from the crease added to the top and the way a man wore his hat often signaled his mood.  A hat titled back on the head indicated the wearer was relaxed, it if was pulled down in front, he was in a serious mood.  And cocked to the side meant the man may be shifty. The hat afforded shade as well as individuality.  In a pinch, it was a fan to help start a fire, a water container to put one out or to water a horse, even to goad to get a mount in a hurry.

And that’s some history of the Cowboy Hat …..
